Ella knows that some people think they ought to be really sad about their dad’s sickness and health issues. Like, really sad in the sense that they’d stop doing everything else and just mourn him years before he dies. And sure, some days she could imagine doing that, but most days she just wants to live.
With mothers that are best friends, Rhys Hiller and Zoey Smith have practically grown up together, considering each other family.

The winter has been stressful and Thom has been tired, more so than he usually is when the physical parts of his work overwhelm him from time to time.
Silvia Olofski, oldest child of Mireia and Corbin Olofski celebrates her 5th birthday in 4020. She’s looking forward to school and to all the fun things she will be allowed to do now.

After the turbulence with her pregnancy and abortion last year, Kirsten Cousland has had a bit of a rough year. Not because she regrets the decision but because she regrets being in the situation in the first place, regrets having made a name for herself as someone who “gets in trouble”. Not that a lot of people know, but she knows.
It feels weird and unfair, especially since Alvin just seems to stroll around being the exact same person as he was before. Maybe he feels different, too, but he doesn’t mention anything about it.
Either way, her mom had insisted on throwing Kirsten a birthday party in their back yard for her 16th birthday.

Sonia and August Wester feel like they’ve been waiting forever to meet their baby. Sonia because she is pretty fed up with pregnancy, August because it’s his first child and he cannot even fathom what it’s going to be like once the baby arrives.
When her water breaks in the late afternoon, they remain at home for a couple of hours, letting the contractions increase in frequency and strength. Sonia has done this before, after all, and feels confident that she knows what to look out for.
